Originally this was going to have a different joke, something to do with the left being more anatomical and the right being more expressive. But as I was drawing them side by side I realized it wasn’t true at all. In my old style (left) I spent all my time on the face and the body just had to fall in place, but this led to me having no control over where the body would go and a lot of cut off feet. The style on the right starts with the body and spends more time getting the pose right, so I can actually make it go where I want it.
There’s nothing wrong with going off the page, in fact one of the first things I learned in an art class was to “go off all 4 sides.” But if you don’t have control over your characters, you need to switch it up.
